Robust bamboo stems belonging to the hybrid species ×THYRSOCALAMUS LIANG (Phai Liang, ไผ่เลี้ยง) are now ready for harvesting; all cut stems are given away for free

— UPDATE 27 APRIL 2024: Only a few stems (less than 10) can be harvested. —
— UPDATE 18 MARCH 2024: Only 15–20 stems can be harvested. —
— UPDATE 8 MARCH 2024: About 50 stems, or several more, can be harvested. —

Stem length: approx. 10–15 m, basal diameter 3.5–6 cm, heavy, robust, strong, long-lasting, thick-walled, basally solid, without branches on the lower half of the stems.

×Thyrsocalamus liang, ไผ่เลี้ยง (phai liang), is indigenous to Thailand but can also be found in neighboring countries. Its stems can be used for numerous purposes, including in light construction as pillars and beams. Young shoots are edible and delicious.

Stem harvesting requires your assistance and the cut stems are free; the procedure:

  • If you first want to see what you can get, please let me know (in English or Thai) and suggest a date and time for an appointment at the Baan Sammi location to examine and select the bamboo stems.
  • Then, let's schedule an appointment for harvesting the stems. Only two people, you (or your worker) and I are required to do this job which will take a few hours.
  • Using an electric reciprocating saw, I will saw off the bamboo stems close to their bases.
  • Occasionally, you and I have to secure the stem, usually by hand, so that the stem will fall in the desired direction, thus avoiding harm to other nearby plants, fences, and buildings. A rope is usually not needed but available if needed.
  • After cutting a stem and laying it on the ground, you have to chop off the branches of the stem with a sharp machete (if you don't have a machete, you can use mine).
  • Based on your specifications regarding transportable or desired stem lengths, I will reduce the length using the electric reciprocating saw.
  • You need to collect the branches and the thin tip of the stem and load them onto your pickup car. They can't be left where they are.
  • You need to gather those stems you wish to receive. Stems that are too thin or too old or damaged can be left near the private driveway at Baan Sammi.
  • It's advised to use work gloves. Additionally, remember to carry ropes for tying up the stems on your car and affix a red sign to the spot where the stems emerge from the loading area of your vehicle. Usually, the entire work can be completed in one day either in the morning or the afternoon, provided it's a day without rain.
