Build your bamboo fence with FREE bamboo STEMS that you can harvest yourself!

There are numerous bamboo fencing constructions and designs, most are of three main elements, each of which works best with poles of different bamboo species:

Examples: Phai Sang Mon, a Dendrocalamus species, is ideal for thick fence poles (left), Phai Ruak Dam, Thyrsostachys oliveri, is good for fence rails (center), and Schizostachyum zollingeri can be easily split for fence strips (right).

1, fence pole: vertical element that bears the load of the fence and is anchored to the ground.

2, fence rail: horizontal element, usually two, a bottom rail and an upper or top rail, connecting two fence poles.

3, fence strip or picket: usually vertical, which limits the penetrability of the fence.

For fence poles, strong (thick-walled to solid) and thick-diameter bamboo stems are preferred e.g., giant Dendrocalamus species, tall and thick-growing Bambusa and Gigantochloa species, Thyrsostachys oliveri, ×Thyrsocalamus liang.

For fence rails, thick-walled to solid, straight bamboo stems of moderate stem diameter are preferred e.g., Thyrsostachys oliveri, ×Thyrsocalamus liang.

For fence strips, split thin-walled bamboo stems, or bamboo stems of small diameter up to 1 cm thick are preferred e.g., Schizostachyum species, some Bambusa and Gigantochloa species.

All these bamboo species grow at Bambusetum Baan Sammi, and you can harvest their stems for free. Details on request.
