Decorative bamboo poles of 2 species are ready to be harvested from January to December 2023 for FREE

— UPDATE 30 NOVEMBER 2023: Gigantochloa marga is still available; Bambusa maculata is no longer available. —

At Bambusetum Baan Sammi, there are 2 Indonesian bamboo species that develop stems with black spots or blotches, making them ideal for interior design, furniture, handicrafts, and fence pickets, and also for scaffolding and medium-strong construction.

Bambusa maculata (BS-0439), ไผ่อังกะลุง (phai angkalung), ไผ่ตุตุล (phai tutun), and
Gigantochloa marga (BS-0077), ไผ่หนังเสือ (phai nang suea), Tiger Stripe Bamboo.

These patterns of the internode surfaces are natural and species-specific and occur on living, healthy stems of the two above-mentioned Indonesian bamboos. It is a genetically fixed pigment modification like in other well-known bamboo species such as Bambusa lako, Gigantochloa atroviolacea, Phyllostachys nigra, etc.

Quantity: About 50 or more stems can be harvested. Length: approx. 10–15 m, basal diameter 3–6 cm.

More text information about the species with numerous photos are in BAMBOOS OF THAILAND:

Stem harvesting is easy and requires your help, and the cut poles are free; the procedure:

  • If you are interested, please let me know (in English or Thai) and suggest an appointment to view and select the clumps, harvest the stems, cut the stems into desired or transportable lengths, and pick up the poles. No more than two people, you and I are needed to do this job.
  • With an electric reciprocating saw, I will saw off the bamboo stems close to the base.
  • You need to secure the stems, usually by hand only, so that the stem will fall in the wanted direction, thus avoiding harm to other nearby plants, fences, and buildings. A suitable rope if needed is available.
  • With an electric reciprocating saw, I will saw off the useless top or upper part of the bamboo stems.
  • You must chop off the branches from the usable stems with your own secateurs, or with a sharp machete. You may need to move the useless branches and the top of the stems to the private driveway nearby, and leave them there; they are due for later shredding to be done by ourselves.
  • Shortening the stems to desired or transportable lengths can be done by yourself using your machete, hand saw, or electric circular saw, or by myself using my electric reciprocating saw.
  • I recommend you use work gloves. The whole work may take several hours, depending on how many poles you require.
  • You may pick up the poles for transportation on the same day or later date. All poles are free.

An alternative to the above-described procedure is harvesting all the bamboo stems myself (without your help) and storing them protected from rain and sun. The bamboo poles can be pre-cut to a specific length depending on the requirements of the interested party, but the maximum size is 3.5 m. However, these bamboo poles are not free but are charged at 3 Baht per meter.
